Affogato
Hot espresso, cold gelato and one beautifully simple Italian idea.

The Original Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 generous scoop fiordilatte or vanilla gelato
- 1 freshly prepared espresso
Method
Place the gelato in a chilled dessert glass or small bowl. Pour the espresso over it immediately before serving and bring it straight to the table.
The Story Behind Affogato
Affogato means “drowned” in Italian: the gelato is literally drowned in espresso. Its exact invention is not securely documented, but it is firmly rooted in Italian coffee-and-gelato culture. The dish could only have developed after espresso technology became available, and it remains deliberately minimal: temperature contrast, bitterness and sweetness do most of the work.

Technique That Makes the Difference
Serve it immediately. If the espresso waits, it loses aroma; if the dessert waits after pouring, the gelato melts into a sweet coffee soup. A sturdy scoop and a short, strong espresso create the best contrast.
Common Variations
- Add a small measure of amaretto, coffee liqueur or hazelnut liqueur.
- Finish with grated dark chocolate or toasted hazelnuts.
- Use chocolate gelato for a deeper dessert, though vanilla or fiordilatte keeps the classic balance.
The Aurelia Blue Version
Aboard Aurelia Blue, the classic version needs almost no improvement. It is ideal after dinner because it uses few ingredients and creates a little theatre at the table without turning the galley into a project.
The Cockpit Moment
Best after a long dinner at anchor, when the conversation is still going and nobody is ready for the evening to end.

Enjoy Responsibly Aboard
Alcohol belongs to relaxed hours at anchor, never to active sailing duties or safety-critical work. Where practical, an alcohol-free version is included.
