The Original Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 small ripe banana
  • 30 ml aged Caribbean rum
  • 45 ml coconut cream or light cream
  • 30 ml milk
  • A squeeze of lime
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • Ice

Method

Blend all ingredients with a small amount of ice until smooth. Taste before adding extra sweetness; a ripe banana is often enough. Pour into a chilled glass and grate a little nutmeg on top.

The Story Behind Banana Rum Cream

Banana Rum Cream is an Aurelia Blue creation rather than a historical classic. It uses a familiar Caribbean flavour relationship: ripe banana, rum, coconut and spice. Similar combinations appear across frozen island drinks, but this version is designed to stay recognisably banana-forward instead of becoming an overloaded blender cocktail.

Technique That Makes the Difference

Use a truly ripe banana and keep the ice controlled. Too much ice dilutes the fruit; too much coconut cream hides it. Lime is important because it stops the drink from tasting flat.

Common Variations

  • Leave out the rum for an easy alcohol-free dessert.
  • Add cold coffee for a banana-coffee version.
  • Use plain cream instead of coconut cream for a softer flavour.

The Aurelia Blue Version

This is practical aboard because ripe bananas occasionally need a quick and honourable destination. The drink turns a galley problem into dessert.

The Cockpit Moment

Best when the fruit basket has reached the point where a decision can no longer be postponed.

Enjoy Responsibly Aboard

Alcohol belongs to relaxed hours at anchor, never to active sailing duties or safety-critical work. Where practical, an alcohol-free version is included.
