Brandy Alexander
Brandy, cacao, cream and nutmeg — elegant, old-fashioned and unapologetically after dinner.

The Original Recipe
Ingredients
- 30 ml cognac or brandy
- 30 ml brown crème de cacao
- 30 ml cream
- Freshly grated nutmeg
Method
Shake the brandy, crème de cacao and cream briskly with ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and grate nutmeg over the surface.
The Story Behind Brandy Alexander
The Brandy Alexander developed from the earlier Alexander, a pre-Prohibition cocktail made with gin, crème de cacao and cream. A printed Alexander recipe appeared in Hugo Ensslin’s 1916 book. The brandy version became the better-known form later, but stories about exactly who inspired the name remain disputed. That uncertainty is typical of many early cocktails.

Technique That Makes the Difference
Shake hard enough to aerate the cream, but not so long that excessive dilution thins the drink. Fresh nutmeg is more than decoration: it gives aroma before the first sip.
Common Variations
- Use dark crème de cacao for a deeper chocolate note.
- Replace some cream with coconut cream for a restrained tropical variation.
- Serve over one large cube for a slower, less formal version.
The Aurelia Blue Version
This is one of the few creamy classics that needs no tropical fruit to feel luxurious. On Aurelia Blue, a light grating of Caribbean nutmeg gives it a natural regional connection.
The Cockpit Moment
Best when dinner has been elegant enough to deserve one final, slightly old-fashioned gesture.

Enjoy Responsibly Aboard
Alcohol belongs to relaxed hours at anchor, never to active sailing duties or safety-critical work. Where practical, an alcohol-free version is included.
