The Original Recipe

Ingredients

  • 30 ml vodka
  • 30 ml coffee liqueur
  • 30 ml Irish cream liqueur
  • 30 ml cream

Method

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled glass. For a frozen version, blend with ice until smooth.

The Story Behind Mudslide

The Mudslide is linked to the Wreck Bar at Rum Point on Grand Cayman in the 1970s. According to the best-known account, a guest ordered a White Russian, but the bar had no fresh cream. Irish cream was used instead, creating a richer variation that soon acquired its own name. Frozen resort versions came later and helped turn it into a full dessert in a glass.

Technique That Makes the Difference

The classic shaken drink is smoother and less bulky than the frozen version. Avoid covering the glass in too much chocolate syrup: it looks dramatic but can bury the coffee flavour.

Common Variations

  • Blend with ice for the familiar frozen resort style.
  • Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a true dessert version.
  • Use aged rum instead of vodka for a Caribbean variation.

The Aurelia Blue Version

The Grand Cayman origin gives the Mudslide genuine Caribbean relevance. Our preference is a smaller, coffee-forward version rather than an enormous glass dominated by sugar.

The Cockpit Moment

A slow nightcap for an evening when dessert and cocktail feel like one decision too many.

Enjoy Responsibly Aboard

Alcohol belongs to relaxed hours at anchor, never to active sailing duties or safety-critical work. Where practical, an alcohol-free version is included.
